SULONG – Laban ng Masa UNITY STATEMENT

It has been said that rats are the first to jump a sinking ship. The recent development in the withdrawal of support by members of Cabinet, other sections of the ruling class while the rest of GMA's crumbling empire scramble to prop her flagging regime with their support is testimony to the frenzy of rodents amidst a calamity.

The wind of compromise is gaining ground. The current formula of resolution is that GMA regime has to go through a constitutional process of changing the guard: a formula which points to tampering of the 1986 Constitution.

The options at hand are not only unpalatable rather highly unacceptable not only to the Filipino people as a whole but most especially to the workers of this land.

A military junta and/or a military take-over is an option guaranteed to create chaos rather than harmony and a guaranteed formula to kill off whatever democratic space the people are able to enjoy under the neo-Nazi GMA.

We know only too well that the continued stay of GMA and her ilk in power will be to the detriment to the interests of the people since she has remained faithful to the neo-liberal policies that have decimated the economy along with the benefits and the puny wages that the workers are able to bring to their families.

The policies governing labor that have opened the arena to attack workers rights' from job security up to organizing and other basic rights will not be done away with even if GMA is to step down. Changing personalities will definitely only continue the old problems with new actors. More than any other sector, it is the workers who bear the brunt of GMA's continued stay in power.

Thus, it is the whole rotten system that has got to go and it is up to the people to realize this option to the fullest degree. The workers have banded together despite their differences to call for the end to GMA's rule.and block all efforts to institutionalize military rule.

Our alternative to the present state of affairs is to establish a government of the workers and the people. This is the most just, humane and democratic alternative to what is happening. We are urging everyone to take part and realize that we must seize this time to make our voices count towards genuine social change.
